FEEL IT ON THE FIRST - OCTOBER Breast Cancer Awareness Month

#FeelItOnTheFirst: A Rounder's Guide to Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, support those affected, and promote early detection. As a community of rounders players, we're all about staying active and healthy. So, let's use our platform to spread the word about this important cause.

What does #FeelItOnTheFirst mean? The hashtag encourages everyone to perform a self-check on the first day of every month. This simple act could save lives. By becoming familiar with your breasts and noticing any changes, you can detect potential issues early on.

Why is early detection so important? According to the Breast Cancer Now charity, early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. When breast cancer is caught in its early stages, the chances of successful treatment are much higher.

Stats that matter:

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK: Around 55,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
  • Screening programs are making a difference: The UK's National Breast Screening Programme (NBSP) has helped to reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer.
  • There are many resources available to help people with breast cancer: Breast Cancer Now and Cancer Research UK are two of the leading charities in the UK that provide support to people affected by breast cancer.

How can you help? As a rounders player, you can play a vital role in raising awareness:

  • Spread the word: Share this blog with your teammates, friends, and family.
  • Perform self-checks: Encourage your fellow rounders players to adopt the #FeelItOnTheFirst habit.
  • Support Rounders In Pink: Between 18th & 20th October, why not attend your fixtures dressed in pink and if you can bake, make some cupcakes for fellow teams and raise some money for our fundraiser

Let's come together as a community and make a difference. By understanding the importance of early detection and taking action, we can help ensure that everyone has the best possible chance of beating breast cancer.

Back in December 2024, our very own CEO Julie and Social Media Manager Amy were invited to join the brilliant Riff Room Podcast in Port Talbot, and what a chat it was! We sat down with two cracking lads who were genuinely curious (and hilarious!) about all things MyRounders. From the early days of launching in 2022 to the exciting growth across Wales, with 26 leagues and over 6,000 registered players (December, 2024) —they asked us some fantastic questions. One of the hosts, proudly wearing a 'Bryn it On' cap (his girlfriend’s team), had a personal connection to the positive impact rounders has had on women in the community. We laughed about some of the cheeky team names and had a heartfelt discussion about how hard it is to make new friends as adults. But that’s where social rounders shines - bringing people from all walks of life together through fun, friendship, and a shared love of the game. Teams have gone from strangers to travel buddies, from teammates to real life support systems. It’s a beautiful thing to witness, and we're so grateful for platforms like 'Riff Room Podcast' that help share our story. If you’d like to watch our full interview, just click here to tune in. We cover some seriously funny topics (you’ll definitely get a laugh!), but also dive into the heart of what MyRounders is really about - connection, community, and the happiness of playing a sport. Since that chat back in December, we’ve grown even more, now with over 8,000 registered players across Wales! While most take part in our vibrant mixed leagues, something we’re especially proud of is the rise of our women’s only leagues. These incredible spaces bring together women of all ages and abilities to play, support each other, and just have fun every single week. It’s honestly amazing to see, and we can’t wait for what’s next. MyRounders

We’re thrilled to announce that our incredible founder, Julie, has been nominated for the 2025 Pinc List – a celebration of the most influential LGBTQ+ people in Wales! Now in its tenth year, the Pinc List – curated with the support of Pride Cymru – shines a light on individuals who are making a powerful difference across Welsh communities. From national campaigners to local changemakers, it’s a who's who of trailblazers and leaders, and we’re so proud to see Julie recognised among them. Championing Inclusion Through Sport Julie launched MyRounders with a clear mission: to build a fun, social, and welcoming environment where LGBTQ+ adults can feel free to play, belong, and connect. What began as a grassroots idea has quickly grown into one of Wales’ most exciting community sport movements. Over the past year alone, MyRounders has grown from 6,000 to over 8,000 registered players, with leagues expanding across Swansea, Cardiff, Barry, Bridgend, and beyond. “At its heart, MyRounders is all about community,” says Julie. “Sport hasn’t always been inclusive for LGBTQ+ people, but we’re changing that – one game at a time.” From training inclusive umpires, to launching confidence and building coaching clinics, Julie and the MyRounders team are redefining what sport can look like when diversity and representation lead the way. Wales Steps Forward Julie’s nomination comes at a time of huge progress for LGBTQ+ visibility in Wales and marks the 40th anniversary of the first Pride march in Wales. With more inclusive groups forming across the nation – even in its most rural areas – and vibrant Pride events growing every year, Wales is becoming a beacon of hope for equality and inclusion. This year’s Pinc List also celebrates the community’s achievements in sport, including the successful bid to host EuroGames Cardiff 2027 – an international LGBTQ+ multi-sport festival. Congratulations to our 'Gaffa' and everyone who made this year’s Pinc List. Your dedication, courage, and leadership are changing lives – on and off the field! 📸 Want to get involved?
