FEEL IT ON THE FIRST - OCTOBER Breast Cancer Awareness Month

#FeelItOnTheFirst: A Rounder's Guide to Breast Cancer Awareness

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness, support those affected, and promote early detection. As a community of rounders players, we're all about staying active and healthy. So, let's use our platform to spread the word about this important cause.

What does #FeelItOnTheFirst mean? The hashtag encourages everyone to perform a self-check on the first day of every month. This simple act could save lives. By becoming familiar with your breasts and noticing any changes, you can detect potential issues early on.

Why is early detection so important? According to the Breast Cancer Now charity, early detection significantly improves treatment outcomes. When breast cancer is caught in its early stages, the chances of successful treatment are much higher.

Stats that matter:

  • Breast cancer is the most common cancer in the UK: Around 55,000 women and 400 men are diagnosed with breast cancer every year.
  • Screening programs are making a difference: The UK's National Breast Screening Programme (NBSP) has helped to reduce the number of deaths from breast cancer.
  • There are many resources available to help people with breast cancer: Breast Cancer Now and Cancer Research UK are two of the leading charities in the UK that provide support to people affected by breast cancer.

How can you help? As a rounders player, you can play a vital role in raising awareness:

  • Spread the word: Share this blog with your teammates, friends, and family.
  • Perform self-checks: Encourage your fellow rounders players to adopt the #FeelItOnTheFirst habit.
  • Support Rounders In Pink: Between 18th & 20th October, why not attend your fixtures dressed in pink and if you can bake, make some cupcakes for fellow teams and raise some money for our fundraiser

Let's come together as a community and make a difference. By understanding the importance of early detection and taking action, we can help ensure that everyone has the best possible chance of beating breast cancer.

We’re excited to share that MyRounders has been featured by the National Institute for Sport & Health (NISH) , recognising our commitment to making sport social, simple and inclusive for adults across Wales. 'MyRounders was created to offer fun, low-pressure opportunities for people aged 16+ to be active. With mixed and women’s leagues running in Swansea and beyond, we welcome players of all backgrounds, abilities and fitness levels — with a strong focus on enjoyment, connection and community. Since launching in 2022, the impact has been remarkable. Participants tell us they’ve gained confidence, made new friends and rediscovered their enthusiasm for physical activity. For many, it’s not just about the game — it’s about belonging. One challenge we continue to tackle is changing perceptions of sport. Many adults associate sport with competition or past experiences at school. MyRounders aims to show that activity can be relaxed, welcoming and inclusive, and that taking the first step is the hardest part. Our membership with NISH has been invaluable in supporting this mission. Through the network, we’ve connected with partners who share our vision for accessible movement and community wellbeing. We’re now exploring how collaboration with NISH can help us better understand and demonstrate the wellbeing benefits of social sport. As Julie says: “A simple, social game can make a huge difference to wellbeing and inclusion, and we’re excited to continue growing that impact with support from NISH.” With over 370 teams across 38 leagues in Wales, MyRounders continues to grow — and we’re excited for what comes next. Anyone can get involved. Teams can register online , and individuals can sign up to be matched with local groups. All equipment is provided — keeping everything simple, social and inclusive.'
